My wife and I have been brainstorming. If someone (not saying who) came out with an English sefer of Shabbos morning drashos given by Rav Moshe Weinberger, what would be a good title?
This is very tough. It should get across the uniqueness of Rav Weinberger's message and convey the fact that the content is deep but intimately connected to our daily lives. It is also nothing that could be considered conventional, trite, or "more of the same." It is quite challenging to come up with a memorable title that conveys the aforementioned message to the reader without resorting to corny puns or exaggerated hyperbole. Quite a task.
We came up with a few ideas (see below). Please vote on those title ideas in the poll at the top of the right sidebar. And more importantly, if you have additional ideas, PLEASE leave those ideas in the comment section. If some seem particularly good, I may create a new poll with the new set of finalists to get more people's thoughts on those. Everybody's help on this is greatly appreciated! Thanks! I really like that "Shapir Ka'amarta" idea. We thought of a variation of the Moshe Emes idea, but decided it might make Rebbe look "ga'avadik" Ch'VSh. Thank you for the ideas!

ReplyDeleteWhile I like "Let my people grow", I will suggest "Keep the fire buring-Rabbi Moshe Weinbeger on the Parsha".
ReplyDeleteAside from the obvious reference to "Aish" (Kodesh), I think that the title alludes to both inspiration and the effort involved in keeping it aflame.
I like Neil's suggestion - it hits the nail on the head and really sums up what Rav Weinberger's whole message is about. Otherwise, "Vayomer Moshe" without "El Ha'Am"

I had thought about "Souls on Fire" also, but it happens to be the title of a book by Elie Wiesel:

As a side note, I recall hearing (in a live shiur from Rav Weinberger years ago) that Elie Wiesel and Rav Weinberger's father were from the same shetel.
I was also thinking about "Keep the flame alive" but that title is more suited for an NCSY publication. :)

Sadly, Rabbi Frand and the marketing people at Artscroll took the best title for this type of publication.
"Rabbi Frand-In Print".
I strongly think any connection to fire, amber, burning etc is KEY for the title. While Rav Weinberger is known for his shiurim, breath of Torah knowledge, ability to get to the crux of the matter, it's being the "Rav of Cong. Aish Kodesh" and the kehillah that he has created that he is primarily identified with and that's what should be branded.
If the compiler of this drasha collection needs an editor...

As the pasuk on the aron kodesh in the Shul Rav Aviner in a foot note to Rav Kook's Orot brings a piece from Rav Aviner how every Jew no matter how far they are from Judiasim has a part of them that is still connected.
Other ideas would be "Libi U'Livisari Yeraninu L'Keil Chai"
or "Nafshi Yisheina V'Libi Er"

ReplyDeleteThis is a paraphrase from the yerushalmi daf 65 which states that the beis hamikdash was destroyed in fire, but will ultimately be rebuilt in fire....to me this is the essence of what is happening in Rebbes drashot and the avodah at aish kodesh.
I would then in english call it Drashot of Mo"r HaRav Moshe Weinberger shlita to clearly identify the sefer.

I found TY Berakhos 4:3 34a, and repeated in TY Taanis 2:2 10a:
כי באש החרבתה ובאש אתה עתיד לבנותה כאמור (זכריה ב:ט) וַאֲנִי אֶהְיֶה לָּהּ נְאֻם ה חוֹמַת אֵשׁ סָבִיב וּלְכָבוֹד אֶהְיֶה בְתוֹכָהּ.
There is also TB Bava Qama 60b:
מר הקב"ה עלי לשלם את הבערה שהבערתי אני הציתי אש בציון שנאמר (איכה ד, יא) ויצת אש בציון ותאכל יסודותיה ואני עתיד לבנותה באש שנאמר (זכריה ב:ט) ואני אהיה לה חומת אש סביב ולכבוד אהיה בתוכה
Bimheira beyameinu, amein.
(I wonder what the Temple Institute says about that gemara.)
BTW, the girsa in Berakhos is SLIGHTLY different than Ta'anis, but it's clearly the same maamar (of which I only quoted part), two girsa'os. Berakhos has

ReplyDeleteThe Eim Habonim Semeicha deals with this, he explains that after we build it, a fire will descend an enclose the structure.

ReplyDeleteThat's a cool idea. It's Rav "Chaim Moshe" though. A bit harder to do something book title-wise with "Rechem," which can have very deep meanings but is more feminine sounding than "elevated fire," "supernal fire" or something like that.
